We’re about halfway through our data collection period for the Mapping the Food Environment survey effort. Our team of volunteers is conducting in-person surveys at several locations throughout our study area in central Columbus, and we’re also getting a terrific response to our online version of the survey. Visit go.osu.edu/FoodSurvey to participate in the study!
The USDA Food Access Research Atlas is a helpful tool for exploring food access at the U.S. Census Tract level. In the map shown of central Columbus, the light orange represents tracts with low income and low food access (at the 0.5-mile level), and the purple shows tracts with low vehicle access. The dark orange shows tracts where these characteristics overlap: low income, low food access, and low vehicle access.
The Food Mapping Team was thrilled to welcome Anne Palmer and Amanda Behrens to OSU last week. Anne and Amanda lead the Maryland Food System Map project at Johns Hopkins Center for a Livable Future. Their visit was made possible by a cosponsorship by the Food Mapping Team, the Agroecosystem Management Program (AMP), and the Center for Urban and Regional Analysis (CURA). While they were here, they met with the Food Mapping Team and presented a public CURA Roundtable discussion.
After months of preparation, the Mapping the Food Environment survey has now been launched! Over the coming weeks, our team of volunteers will be conducting in-person surveys at nearly 20 sites throughout central Columbus. At the same time, our online survey will also be available to anyone eligible (18 or older and a resident of our study area). You can take our online survey at go.osu.edu/FoodSurvey.
